It sure is nice having all kinds of readers and contributors on S&H! Today I received an email from one such reader – and yes, it was my dad – that says:
‘Did you know that the word saffron comes from the Arabic asfar, meaning yellow? As for mixing with honey – in 15th century Nuremberg and during the reign of Henry VIII in England adulterating (!) saffron by mixing it with something else was a capital offence. Culprits were burned at the stake or buried alive with their illegal wares. [From The Book of General Ignorance]’
Who would have thought?
