Back from a sojourn to Italy, between Christmas and New Year’s, which mostly focused on gastronomical delights.
We went truffle hunting for white and black truffles in Asti with Zara and her hospitable owner, Giorgio.
It was a cold, cold day but we warmed up inside with these lovely crostoni (I wonder why we tend to call them crostini in the US?).
These are also perfect for a lazy gourmet snack over the holidays. I’ll be making them until I am out of truffles!
You’ll need:
- 8 pieces of bread
- 50 g of butter
- 20 g of black truffles, grated or thinly sliced
- 1 lemon wedge
- salt, pepper
1. Let the butter soften at room temperature and mix with the grated black truffles.
2. Toast the slices of bread in the oven at 300F, let cool slightly, and spread with truffle butter.
3. Return to the oven and toast until butter is completely melted.
4. Serve hot, with a squeeze of lemon juice.
Thanks to Giorgio and his wife (and Zara!) for their hospitality and the recipe!

They don’t look like much! 🙂 But they are quite ‘smelly,’ permeating everything even the soil around them which is how the dog/pig/hunter manages to find them.
