This is very exciting – Local Loaves for Lammas is a campaign where local bakers and millers will be doing something special to mark the first day of the wheat harvest known as Lammas day. Come and bake a loaf of real bread at your local bakery! Participating bakers are listed on the website.
Lammas (not llamas!) facts
- Lammas takes its name from hlafmaesse, the Old English for loaf mass
- The origins of Lammas are ancient and uncertain. Many sources link it to the earlier pagan festival Lughnasadh, held in honour of the god Lugh. Later, Lammas was adopted by the Christian church but others still celebrate it as a pagan festival
- A traditional element of Lammas was to bake a loaf with the first grain of the new harvest, though nowadays, harvest may start a lot later
- Lammas land (or Lammas fields) – land that is common land between Lammas and Lady Day in March. These rights might include the right to graze livestock or grow certain crops
