The other night we went to a new (for us) restaurant here in London called Hunan. None of us had been there before but have been wanting to try it out.
The Hunan concept seems simple but intriguing at the same time: it can be best summed up as a Chinese tapas restaurant. All you do is specify the level of spice that you can handle and any preferences (meat, fish etc.) or allergies and they do the rest, no decision-making necessary!:) We lost count amidst our blissful food state but they will basically keep bringing you food while you can eat it.
The place is small and busy but we didn’t notice as 3+ hours had flown by!
Here is an incomplete list-in-progress of what we had for dinner:
- spicy steamed dumpling
- pan fried dumpling
- green bean tempura (very, very good and so simple)
- fried tofu
- steamed fish roll bundle tied with chinese chive
- fried minced pork w/ stuffed bittergourd and chinese sausage (served with half prawn)
- chicken & minced pork broth
- spinach sesame roll
- crispy duck
- steamed sea bass with light soya sauce
- crispy frogs legs
- prawn dumpling (prawn stuffed with chives)
- poached herbal duck (the herb is dang gui or Angelica sinensis in latin aka female ginseng)
- chicken stuffed with glutinous rice
- garlic lamb
- red bean paste pancake (x2!) with almond jelly (really delicious)
- toffee apple and banana with vanilla ice cream
- chinese tea (x many pots)
- lettuce wrap with minced chicken
- some kind of jellyfish & vegetable spring roll
- ‘cured’ sliced pork (we didn’t like it)
- to start: spicy carrot and cabbage; sweet fried peanuts; something else like pickled zucchini or cucumber?
Our favorites (numbers 3 &12) :
I think this is definitely a place we would all recommend both as an experience and as a foodie destination.
