Strawberries never taste as good as they do when they’re in season (early June to mid-August). You are able to find in season, local strawberries in France and parts of the UK starting from late April these days but they only start having that true sun-ripened taste from the end of May.
Growing up, I loved helping my grandma with our strawberry garden. According to the BBC, one variety of strawberry, Elsanta, accounts for 80% of the British fruit sold in UK supermarkets but look at your local farmers’ markets for different varieties to try. If you look closely, strawberries come in different shapes, sizes and colors and – as a result – different tastes!
I think they really taste good enough just on their own (or with a little balsamic syrup) but here are some fun and creative strawberry recipes to try out this month:
- Strawberry soup
- Strawberry gratin
- Strawberry coconut creams
- Strawberry salad with speck and halloumi
- Strawberry bread
Still to come – our strawberry yogurt custard tart!

Elsanta strawberries are vile, the most commoditised of all the supermarket foods, and the equivalent of golden delicious. Buy any other variety. Also: black pepper.

Mmm I’m thinking balsamic&black pepper might be nice. Thanks for the suggestion!
