I forgot to mention that in the middle of the storminess of last week, we went out for a lovely dinner to celebrate Valerie’s birthday. Val lived in New Zealand for a bit so a new place in her neighborhood in Park Slope caught our eye.
Kiwiana is a true neighborhood spot and you can also tell it’s a place Mark and Beth have put a lot of love into (you may also remember Mark, a NZ native, from season 4 of Top Chef, I believe).
In short: the food was great, the service was great, it was a place that made you happy to be there.
I adored the pickled mussels, my kale slaw, and the truffled honey (yes!) that came with the fried chicken. The fish was just perfect, the lavender ricotta so delicate, and the dessert light and flavorful.
There are some great pictures of all the dishes from the summer menu here. The menu is, to me, the perfect size: guided, but specialized and still leaving you slightly stumped as to which of your favorites to choose.
Note: it’s BYOB, but not for much longer, just until the licensing is sorted out.
Kiwiana, 847 Union Street, Brooklyn, NY 11215.

That bread looks great too. I’m such a mussel fan.

Me too! Pickling them wouldn’t normally be my first choice but maybe now it is!

Thanks! It was really dark in there so we had to get creative!

They were relatively subtle touches to the dishes but oh so good!

The name truffled honey alone has me swooning. Loved this post!

Oh I ate every last little bit of that honey. It was the most addictive thing!
