Before my departure from London and the move of S&H’s official home to NY, I thought I would share a couple (not all!) of our local secrets:
– Bufala cheese and yogurt from tiny stand at Pimlico Saturday farmers market is the best in the city. Get there early because the yogurt is usually gone by midday.
– Me me’s our favorite Vietnamese place in Fulham Broadway. P used to go there so much that they always knew what she wanted:). Love the green mango salad and the black bean stir-fried pork but really, everything is good.
– Greensmiths on Lower Marsh St not only sells great produce but also hosts cheese tastings and has an incredible cozy and inexpensive organic cafe on the mezzanine floor. Try the seasonal soups with a poached egg nestled inside.
– Oddono’s – what can we say! We are here all the time because it is open until 11pm or midnight on weekends. Seasonal gelato specials have included such highlights as candied chestnut and nonna’s fig and pecan flavors. True neighborhood hangout.
– Cocoro is my personal favorite Japanese restaurant in London. Melt-in-your-mouth fish, delectable soy-sauce marinated cherry tomatoes… but also: rowdy Japanese businessmen, serenading karaoke singers, gigantic bottles of sake, and all kinds of cultural clashes. But only if you book to sit downstairs in the basement.
– It’s not always my favorite (though I like the Black Bottom cream cheesy one) but it’s handy to know that Hummingbird does 2-for-1 cupcake specials at the end of the day.
– Amazing pate and other unpretentious gastropub fare at the never too crowded Bridge House.
– I would kill for the sage and pumpkin gnocchi from the Garrison any day. Also, aesthetically speaking, if this were my restaurant, I would be happy.
– If you are an American in London, satisfy your brunch craving at the unoriginally named but delicious Breakfast Club.
– Last but not least, if you live in London and don’t go to Konditor & Cook for the soups & gratins for lunch or for the lemon meringue tarts & cherry brownies for… everything, you are crazy.
Happy eating!
p.s. The Reject Pot Shop is in Chalk Farm. Worth a visit + making a stop at Marine Ices next door for more gelato. I think they may have stopped making my favorite tomato+pesto+mascarpone sauce though…
