This past weekend I finally went to the Merchant’s Yard, a new Russian store and deli/cafe that opened in London. The opening was much delayed and highly anticipated though I do not think that this fact raised my expectations unnecessarily. It did make me hopeful but that’s not a bad thing, is it?
I think that for a non-Russian, a visit would be a fun experience though I’m not sure that the prepared food or the baked goods at the shop represent Russian cuisine or culture all that well – the baked goods are somewhat ‘Westernized’ and look to be mostly viennoise pastries while the the deli item options were not so great when I looked in last week.
There is a good selection of Russian/Eastern European grains, canned goods and fresh dairy (the majority of it Lithuanian). The cheese counter, while a nice touch, did not appear to offer any Russian-made cheeses at all. I did not really peruse the wine collection but it was also nicely presented – the whole place has a bit of rustic cafe feel, similar to Le Pain Quotidien.
The downstairs area has a large common table where you can have tea or breakfast, which is served English style with mushrooms, beans and toast and all the relevant fixings. The Merchant’s Yard also offers takeaway options for lunch.
I have to say that although everyone was very friendly and pleasant (including the local yappy dog) and the atmosphere pretty bright and airy, I was still a little disappointed. I imagined that I would now have a place to indulge my nostalgic cravings and stock up on essentials but alas, the prepared foods leave much to be desired and the grocery item selection is nothing new or spectacular (plus, it’s a bit more expensive than usual, most likely due to the swanky location). It’s worth a visit if you’re in the neighborhood or after something specific. I’ll still stop in to pick up tvorog (farmers’ cheese or ricotta-like Russian cheese) and kefir (pouring/drinking yogurt) because I want to have them or bake with them fairly frequently.

В целом, я ожидала бОльшего. Внешне очень симпатично, народ тоже приятный (и местная собачка тоже 🙂 ) и продукты свежие, но ничего нового в смысле ассортимента я не заметила. Особенно расстроила выпечка (кроме Наполеона, который я не попробовала, но выглядил он прилично!), которая уж никак на ‘русскую’ не претендовала – спложной viennoise. Молочных продуктов много, но они все литовские. Хороший выбор колбас, консерв и круп. На сырном прилавке почему-то совсем ‘западные сыры’ типа рокфора. Из кулинарии тоже посмотреть особо не на что – беляши, селедка под шубой и оливье. Не знаю… я была там в субботу утром, казалось бы должно было бы быть ‘по-богаче’. Цены достаточно высокие.
Для меня конечно плюс, что магазин достаточно рядом с домом и открыты они по будням и субботам до 8, а по воскресеньям до 7. Есть у них и чай и завтрак (English breakfast, правда, с бобами и т.п.) и на нижнем этаже стоит большой деревянный стол для чаепития – там уютно и светло. Выбором вина особенно не интересовалась в этот заход, но оно было).
Понятно, что из-за местa расположения ориентир взят и на не русских клиентов тоже, но все равно жалко, что так – красиво, но ничего интересного.. Заходить буду иногда все равно за творогом и кефиром. Кстати, хлеба я там тоже не заметила. Спрошу в следующий раз.
