Onwards with pt 2, finally, which brings us to that Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday:
We basically crawled in the heat to Williamsburg, but it was all worth it at the quiet and cool Roebling Tea Room where we had:
the potato sandwich (potatoes, mashed and otherwise, inside and out!)
and the delectable Baked Cheddar Eggs with raisin fennel toast (mmm), apple butter (mmm) & grits (mmm mmm). Actually, of these wonderful things on my plate, the eggs were the only disappointing thing as the cheese felt a bit dry/overbaked.
Still, we were all pretty happy.
We then wandered to a couple of cheese shops and Whisk, a wonderful everything-cooking-community store.
… ending up at Blue Bottle coffee shop. This is the neighborhood for coffee shops and there is always a new one. This one happens to be very cool and trendy-of-the-month.
Then it was time for a MoMa visit, of course. This time it included the best mango sorbet in the sculpture garden.
After a wander – god, everywhere is so busy on a Sat night, I forget! – we ended up at VYNL in Hell’s Kitchen, where I teased out the mashed sweet potatoes recipe (curry powder is the secret!) out of the very pleasant staff, had meatloaf and lots of watermelon lemonade, which, as you probably know by now, is the quickest way to make me happy. God, you must see the musically themed bathrooms in this place!
Sunday:
Looking back, we managed to pack quite a bit into my last day!
Early morning football at Black Horse which became the preferred destination for the rest of the World Cup.
Brunch at Sidecar Cafe – the girls had tremendous bowls of shrimp grits and I had some wonderful corned beef hash. There may have been Bucks Fizz involved.
We then went to the 7th Heaven 7th Avenue fair, melting and stopping for ice cream at Colson’s. Love this place. Reminds me of Ambleside : ).
After a brief visit to Lion Stationery, yet another cooking store, yet another bookstore (Jay Rayner books & Medium Raw), we went to Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Museum for an exhibit on American fashion. I was super excited to get to see Judy Chicago’s Dinner Party ‘live’ as well, for the first time.
Saying goodbye was hard as always, but we stopped for a tuna melt, iced tea and a cranberry-oatmeal cookie at Prospect Perk on my way out.

POTATO SANDWICH.
Excuse me, I think I’m going to have to lie down for a minute.

Yup. It was: potato bread with mashed potatoes and onions sandwiched in between. And an egg on top. It was pretty much hangover heaven.
