Any place that proclaims itself to be the ‘Temple of Porcine Love’ builds fairly high expectations. The Swinery (our neighbors on wordpress) is a deceptively quaint butcher shop/deli shop – deceptively so because their products and flavors are bold and far from quaint.
Unfortunately, there were no bacon chocolate chip cookies on the day we visited and the bakery section looked a little empty, but we still tried out some bacon caramels and took a good look around. The staff was friendly and the establishment is clearly a neighborhood destination in West Seattle. In addition to the butcher section of the shop, there is a good selection of cured meats, cheeses, and – obviously – bacon. It seems like the Swinery has been involved in some controversy in 2010 surrounding its change in ownership, but when we visited, things seemed to have been running fairly smoothly and (barring the temporary absence of a baker)!
Most importantly, I continued my pig tour 2011. There are a LOT of pigs in Seattle.
